Case study · Micro Boutique Living

Small was the whole point.

A brand built from nothing, from the name to the art on the walls.

One brand, built from nothing, 2010 to 2017.
The situation

Small spaces, designed well, right in the middle of town. That was the idea.

There was no name anyone knew. No look. No language. Just the idea, and a family willing to build it.

What I did

Structure first. Then the finish. Then the party.

Brand · the structure

Make small feel like a choice.

I worked with them from the very start. What it's called, what it stands for, how it talks.

The hard part with small is that people hear compromise. The brand had to make small feel like something you'd choose.

Creative · how it looks and feels

Then the buildings themselves.

The identity, and then the properties. Interior design. Wayfinding. Color systems. Sourcing the art on the walls.

This is where my background shows. I came up through 3D and physical spaces, so I don't think a brand stops at the logo. You should be able to walk through it.

Marketing · the party

Each opening had its own launch.

Go-to-market for each property. The launch websites and the social channels that introduced them.

What came out of it
0123properties across Atlantic Canada
01234567years, 2010 to 2017

Three properties across Atlantic Canada. Wolfville, Antigonish and Fredericton.

It's still a family business. Today it runs long-term leases and hotel stays under the one name.

How I work

When there's nothing there yet, the structure comes first. Then how it looks. Then the party.

You could call this hospitality branding or real estate marketing. I think of it as building the house properly the first time.

What does it take to build a brand from scratch?

Decide what it is and who it's for before anyone designs anything. Then carry that through everything a person touches. Here that went all the way to the art on the walls.

Is interior design part of brand?

When your product is a place, it's most of it. People believe what they walk into more than what they read.

Can one person take a brand from idea to launch?

Yes, if that person has done strategy, design and marketing. I brought in specialists where it made sense. The thinking stayed in one head, and that keeps it consistent.

Starting something from nothing?

Twenty minutes. No deck.
